Difference Between Rack-Mount Industrial Computers and Commercial Computers

Generally, the industry classifies computers into two main types: rack-mount industrial computers and commercial computers. They differ significantly in terms of usage, functionality, operating environments, design requirements, testing methods, lifespan, and reliability.

Purpose and Function of Rack-Mount Industrial Computers

Rack-mount industrial computers are primarily used in industrial automation, smart manufacturing, robotic control, data acquisition, and automated testing. They support various industrial communication protocols, such as serial and parallel protocols, TCP/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus, ProfiBus, and CAN bus, to enable communication and control with various industrial control devices. Additionally, industrial computers feature characteristics such as real-time performance, reliability, and safety, meeting the stringent requirements of industrial automation for precise control, efficient production, and data acquisition.

Commercial computers are mainly used in general consumer market areas such as office work, study, entertainment, and communication. Their functions focus on office applications, internet browsing, multimedia entertainment, and social networking to meet the daily needs of individuals and businesses.

Appearance of Rack-Mount Industrial Computers

Rack-mount industrial computers typically come in four main forms: rack-mount industrial computers, industrial all-in-one PCs, fanless industrial computers, and ruggedized special-purpose computers.

Rack-mount industrial computers are traditional types, usually 19 inches wide and ranging in height from 1U to 16U, suitable for direct installation into standard racks. They are characterized by strong expandability, typically featuring multiple PCI-e slots to support various industrial control cards and other expansion boards.

System Security of Rack-Mount Industrial Computers

Industrial all-in-one PCs integrate display and computing capabilities, with common sizes ranging from 8 inches to 21 inches. They use different types of touch screens, such as acoustic wave touch screens, infrared touch screens, resistive touch screens, or multi-point capacitive touch screens. Different touch screen types are suited for different application environments; resistive touch screens offer high stability and are unaffected by electromagnetic radiation, while multi-point capacitive touch screens provide a better user experience and broader applicability.

Fanless industrial computers are designed for industrial environments to avoid equipment overheating caused by fan failures.

Operating Environment of Rack-Mount Industrial Computers

Industrial computers are designed for harsh industrial environments, such as high and low temperatures, humidity, vibration, shock, high altitude low pressure, dust, electromagnetic interference, and saltwater corrosion. They must possess features like dust and water resistance, high-temperature tolerance, and anti-vibration properties to ensure stable operation under harsh conditions.

Commercial computers are suitable for general indoor environments such as offices, homes, and schools, with relatively lenient environmental requirements.

Design Requirements of Rack-Mount Industrial Computers

Rack-mount industrial computers use industrial-grade motherboards, processors, storage devices, and other hardware components to ensure high reliability and stability. Hardware design must meet strict industrial standards, including the use of high-quality components, corrosion-resistant materials, wide voltage power modules, and various industrial interfaces.

Commercial computers use consumer-grade hardware designs, balancing performance and cost while emphasizing appearance, portability, and user experience.
